Severe Deep Bite
What was the problem and what could have happened if left untreated?
The patient presented with a severe deep bite (where the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower teeth) along with crowding. If left untreated, this condition could have led to potential tooth loss due to heavy chewing forces over time, gum disease, and cavities. It could have also resulted in worsening of the bite due to attrition (wearing down or loss of enamel caused by chewing and grinding).
What caused it?
The condition was likely caused by an increased size of the upper jaw combined with a relatively smaller lower jaw, which can occur as an individual develops from childhood to adulthood. Additionally, a lack of sufficient space in the jaws for proper alignment of teeth contributed to the crowding.
What was the treatment done?
Ideally, surgery combined with braces would have been the best treatment option. However, since the patient did not prefer surgery, braces were used to align the teeth, along with mini-implants to help partially correct the severe deep bite (achieving approximately 50% correction). The total treatment duration was 20 months.
