Oral prophylaxis, commonly known as teeth cleaning, is the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from tooth structures. An ultra-sonic scaler might be used to remove the deposits on the teeth.
Plaque is a soft, sticky substance that forms on the teeth which is composed of bacteria and bacterial by-products. Calculus, also known as tartar, is hard mineralized deposit, something like cement formed from the plaque and the minerals in a person’s saliva.
This routine cleaning helps prevent gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues, promoting a healthier smile.
Debridement is a dental procedure performed to remove heavy deposits of plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, especially in cases where significant buildup has occurred, making it difficult to conduct a comprehensive oral examination or perform other treatments effectively.
Scaling and root planning, also known as deep cleaning, is a non-surgical periodontal therapy aimed at treating gum disease. It involves the thorough removal of plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth and root surfaces below the gumline, followed by smoothing of the root surfaces to promote gum tissue reattachment and healing.
It is a method of treating advanced gum (periodontal) disease. The dentist carefully removes plaque and tartar down to the bottom of each periodontal (gum) pocket. A local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort. The dentist smoothens the tooth’s root surface to allow the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Sometimes antibiotics can be placed directly in the pocket to control infection. Treatment often takes more than one visit. Once the gum disease is brought under control, it is very important that you get periodontal maintenance care on a regular basis from the dentist

Teeth cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis or a dental cleaning, is a professional dental procedure to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth. It helps prevent gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues while promoting a cleaner, healthier smile.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends getting your teeth professionally cleaned by a dentist at least every six months. However, some individuals with specific oral health concerns may require more frequent cleanings.
Teeth cleaning offers several benefits, including:
Teeth cleaning is typically not painful, although some individuals may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity, especially if they have sensitive gums or teeth. The procedure is usually gentle and well-tolerated, and any discomfort can be minimized by communicating with our dentist.
Teeth cleaning typically involves several steps, including:
While teeth cleaning can remove surface stains and plaque buildup, it is not a whitening treatment. Professional teeth whitening procedures, either in-office or at-home, are specifically designed to lighten the colour of the teeth and achieve a brighter, whiter smile.
The duration of a teeth cleaning appointment can vary depending on factors such as the amount of plaque and tartar buildup, the thoroughness of the cleaning, and any additional treatments or procedures performed. On average, a routine teeth cleaning appointment may take between 30 minutes to one hour.
