Discoloured Teeth
Overview
Discoloured teeth refer to teeth that have an abnormal colour or stain that deviates from the natural shade of white. Teeth can become discoloured for various reasons, such as poor oral hygiene, certain foods and beverages, tobacco use, aging, genetics, and certain medical conditions or medications. Discoloration can present in different ways, ranging from mild yellowing to dark brown or Gray spots. This can be a cosmetic concern and may affect a person’s self-confidence.
Causes
Discoloured teeth can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar, which can cause teeth to appear yellow or brown.
- Foods and Drinks: Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries, can stain the teeth over time.
- Smoking: Smoking and other tobacco products can cause teeth to appear yellow or brown due to the nicotine and tar in the products.
- Aging: As a person ages, the enamel on their teeth may wear down, which can make the underlying dentin appear more yellow.
- Medications: Some medications, such as certain antibiotics, can cause teeth to become discoloured.
Symptoms
The main symptom of discoloured teeth is an abnormal coloration of the teeth. This may range from a slight yellowing to a more noticeable brown or gray color.
Diagnosis
To determine the best treatment options for discoloured teeth, a dentist will evaluate the cause and severity of the discoloration. They may take x-rays or use other diagnostic tools to get a better understanding of the teeth and underlying structures.
Treatment
There are several treatment options available for discoloured teeth, depending on the underlying cause of the discoloration. Here are a few options:
- Professional Teeth Whitening: Our dentist can use a special bleach to whiten the teeth, either in-office or through at-home treatments.
- Dental Bonding: A tooth-coloured resin is applied to the surface of the teeth and shaped to improve the appearance of the teeth.
- Veneers: Thin, custom-made shells are placed over the front of the teeth to improve their appearance.
- Crowns: Custom-made caps are placed over the teeth to improve their appearance and protect them from further damage.
- Teeth Cleaning: A professional teeth cleaning can remove surface stains and improve the appearance of the teeth.
Prevention
There are several steps a person can take to help prevent discoloured teeth:
- Practice good oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing regularly and seeing a dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups.
- Avoid or limit foods and drinks that can stain the teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries.
- Quit smoking or using other tobacco products.
- Consider using a straw when drinking beverages that can stain the teeth.
- Talk to a dentist before starting any new medications to determine if they may cause tooth discoloration.
