Broken Tooth / Cracked Tooth
Overview
Broken teeth are dental problem that can cause discomfort and affect the appearance of your smile.
If left untreated, a broken tooth can lead to other dental problems, such as infection or further damage to the tooth. In some cases, a broken tooth can also affect the surrounding teeth and gums, causing pain or discomfort.
Causes
A broken tooth can be caused by several factors, including:
- Trauma to the mouth or face
- Cavities or decay that weaken the tooth structure
- Chewing on hard objects or foods
- Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching)
- Weakened teeth due to aging or gum disease
Symptoms
Symptoms of a broken tooth can vary depending on the extent of the damage. Common symptoms include:
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Sharp or rough edges on the tooth
- Visible chips or cracks in the tooth
- Swelling or bleeding around the affected tooth
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
Diagnosis
To diagnose a broken tooth, our dentist will perform a visual examination of the affected tooth and may also take x-rays to assess the extent of the damage. In some cases, a dentist may use a special instrument to test the tooth’s sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures to determine the extent of the damage.
Treatment
The treatment for a broken tooth depends on the severity of the damage. Some treatment options include:
- Dental Bonding: A tooth-coloured resin material is applied to the affected tooth and hardened with a special light to bond the material to the tooth and restore its appearance.
- Dental Crowns: A crown is a cap that covers the damaged tooth, protecting it from further damage and restoring its appearance and function.
- Root Canal Treatment: If the break reaches the tooth’s pulp or nerve, a root canal may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue and save the tooth.
- Extraction: If the tooth is severely damaged or cannot be saved, the tooth may need to be extracted.
Prevention
To prevent broken teeth, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting a dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Other preventive measures include wearing a mouthguard when playing sports or engaging in other high-risk activities, avoiding chewing on hard objects or foods, and addressing any underlying dental issues, such as cavities or gum disease, promptly.
